Comparison

Toggl Track is great. So is your invoicing tool.

Toggl tracks time better than we do, and it does make invoices — PDFs you generate from a report and download. What it doesn't do is send them, get them paid online, chase them when they're late, or bill a retainer. Below: where each tool fits, side by side, no marketing fog.

Where Toggl shines

If you only need to track time, Toggl wins.

The Toggl Track timer UX is genuinely class-leading — fast to start, friendly idle detection, integrations with everything. It also has a free-forever plan and a working invoice generator, which we don't and can't match at $0. If your shop bills out via QuickBooks or your accountant, and you don't need retainers, online payment, or auto-overdue chasing, Toggl is the better tool. Stay there.

  • Best-in-class timer UX
  • Idle detection in the desktop app — we have none
  • More integrations (Slack, Asana, Trello, etc.)
  • Native iOS + Android apps (we're PWA-only)
  • Pomodoro / focus timer in the macOS and Windows desktop apps
  • A free-forever plan

Where we shine

If you bill clients, you need more than a timer.

Toggl's invoice is a PDF you download. Getting it to the client, taking the payment, and chasing it when it's late are still your problem — so most shops end up with Toggl Track plus a billing tool plus a spreadsheet. SB Time Tracker does the whole loop in one place. On price: our $14 seat matches Toggl Premium's discounted first annual year ($14 per user, renewing at $18), and Toggl Starter at $9 is cheaper than us outright.

  • Invoices that send themselves — emailed to the client, not downloaded to your desktop
  • First-class retainer model (flat monthly amount with optional hours allowance)
  • Auto-overdue + dunning emails at 7, 30, and 60 days past due
  • Project P&L with cost vs billable rates
  • Per-user-per-project rate overrides
  • Hosted invoice page on every sent invoice — clients pay online by card or ACH
Project profitability report with revenue, cost, margin and margin percent per project

The honest version

When to stay on Toggl, when to switch.

Stay on Toggl if: you're a freelancer or a small team that bills via QuickBooks or your accountant; a downloaded PDF invoice is enough; you live in the native mobile apps; you need integrations Toggl has and we don't; you need live FX conversion (we render money in a tenant-chosen currency but don't convert exchange rates yet); or price is the deciding factor — Toggl's free plan costs nothing and Starter is $9 per user billed annually, both under our $14.

Switch to us if: you're a 2–10 person US agency that wants invoicing, retainers, P&L, and dunning in the same tool that tracks time — and you'd rather pay one $14 bill than three. Start on a 30-day free trial with every feature turned on, no card.
